NCAA College Football 25 Review

The release of NCAA College Football 25 marks the long-awaited return of college football gaming, and it’s clear from the outset that EA Orlando aimed to recapture the magic that made this series a beloved staple for sports gaming fans. With updated graphics, refined gameplay mechanics, and a host of new features, NCAA College Football 25 is more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it’s a robust and immersive experience that sets a new standard for college football games.  In many ways NCAA might be the best virtual pigskin you can play right now, besting its big brother Madden in a number of areas.  From the first snap, it’s evident that there’s been extra love and care put into the return of this series.  While EA has made some blunders in the past when trying to rekindle their old franchises (NBA Live), they did not make the same mistakes here.  Frankly, it would’ve been hard for them to do that considering there’s no other game in town and a ravenous NCAA fanbase that’s been clamoring for college football for over a decade.  And while they could’ve phoned this one in for a cash grab, they didn’t.

This game could’ve easily been a cash grab

Of the many things that EA Orlando got right with College Football 25, gameplay is a standout for the game.  A multi-layered game with numerous control schemes that offer complexity for veterans while being intuitive and accessible for newcomers.  On the field, player movements are fluid and the physics feel dialed in in a way that Madden never seems to get quite right.  The fluidity of player movements, the realistic tackling mechanics, and the strategic depth offered by the playbooks create a highly engaging on-field experience. The new AI enhancements ensure that both offense and defense react more realistically, making every game feel dynamic and unpredictable.

One of the standout features in this edition is the Road to Glory mode. This mode allows players to create a custom athlete, starting from high school and progressing through college football, with the ultimate goal of reaching the NFL. The mode is immersive, featuring realistic gameplay, and the path to stardom is filled with challenges and opportunities that mirror the real-life journey of aspiring football stars. The addition of coach trust and play selection customization adds a layer of strategic depth, making your decisions on and off the field impactful.

Beyond Road to Glory, NCAA College Football 25 offers a variety of modes to keep players engaged. The Dynasty Mode remains a fan favorite, allowing you to take control of a college program and build it into a powerhouse. The mode includes recruiting, game planning, and managing your team’s progress throughout multiple seasons. The depth and complexity of Dynasty Mode ensure that it remains a rewarding experience for those who enjoy long-term strategy and management.  Dynasty Mode is offered as both an offline and online mode so if you whether you want to go it against the CPU or human opposition, you can do so in CFB 25.  Dynasty Mode in College Football 25 has just about every feature and option that you’d come to expect from a Dynasty Mode and it’s something that many players spend a lot of time on in these game.

Alongside some standard Play Now options, of course there’s an Ultimate Team mode, offering a collectible card-based experience where players can build their dream teams. The mode is packed with challenges, events, and rewards, making it a compelling addition for those who enjoy the thrill of collecting and competing.  While these Ultimate Team modes feel like they’re in every sports game nowadays, like Madden, Ultimate Team feels right at home in the College game as well.

The sheer pageantry of college football is on display

Largely because EA secured the ability to use real players in this game.  This in and of itself makes NCAA 25 more enjoyable than any of the iterations before it.  The fact that it’s not just numbers on a jersey but real players that you’re controlling makes it a much better game overall.  There’s a reason why there aren’t many no name football games on the market, because the real teams and real players make a difference and it’s all about the licensing of this content, which EA does in both Madden and NCAA.

NCAA College Football 25 shines in its visual presentation as well. The stadiums are meticulously detailed, capturing the unique atmosphere of each college venue. The player models are more realistic than ever, with improved animations that bring the game to life. The attention to detail extends to the sidelines and crowd, creating a vibrant and immersive environment that enhances the overall experience.  The sheer pageantry of College Football is on display in this game, with mascots, cheerleaders, team entrances and all of the other little nuances littered around the landscape of college football.  The sound design also deserves praise. The roar of the crowd, the commentary, and the on-field sounds combine to create an authentic college football atmosphere.

The online multiplayer aspect of NCAA College Football 25 is robust, featuring ranked matches, dynasty, and cooperative modes. It’s worth noting that the game did experience some launch issues, particularly with the online Dynasty Mode. Server overloads and connectivity problems were reported by players, which hindered the experience for some. The developers have been quick to address these issues with patches and updates, showing a commitment to improving the player experience.  Most of the online issues seemed to be contained by the Dynasty Mode.  Online quick play, Ultimate Team and other online modes did not seem to be affected by the issues at launch.

The Verdict

NCAA College Football 25 is a triumphant return for the series, offering a comprehensive and enjoyable football experience that caters to both casual fans and hardcore enthusiasts. With its blend of realistic gameplay, stunning graphics, and a variety of engaging modes, it stands as a must-play for any sports gaming fan. While it has faced some early technical challenges, the overall package delivers on the promise of bringing college football back to the forefront of sports gaming. Whether you’re reliving the glory days or experiencing it for the first time, NCAA College Football 25 is a game that deserves a spot in your collection.
