In Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree depending on which routes you take through the DLC, you’ll eventually come across the path which presents you with the message that the “path sealed and obscured by shadow”. There is a way through this pathway, but you’ll need to complete a few objectives and beat some bosses to progress. In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what you need to do to open the path that is sealed and obscured by shadow in the Elden Ring DLC.
Path Sealed and Obscured by Shadow
The path will be first discovered after you’ve made your way through the Belurat Tower. After defeating the Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss, a path will open up that has a staircase that leads to the area that will be locked. Upon examining the door at the top of the long staircase, you will be greeted with the message that it is “sealed and obscured by shadow” with very little else to go on.
To continue on, you’ll first need to beat one of the DLC’s hardest bosses in the Messmer fight at the end of the Shadow Keep dungeon. Doing so will get you a bounty of runes, a remembrance, and one of the keys to unlocking this path in Messmer’s Flame.
After defeating Messmer you will have one piece of this puzzle. The second is located in the Church of Bud with another boss fight gatekeeping the key are for progression.
How to Get to the Church of Bud
The Church of Bud contains a tree that must be burnt down using Messmer’s Flame. To get to the Church and to the tree, you’ll need to progress through the Shadow Keep West Rampart. From there, head west through the Rauh Ancient Ruins, at which point you will encounter the Church of Bud. Check the map above for precise location of the Church. Coming from the West Rampart, you’ll find a fairly straight forward path through you will need to go through an underground cavern to make it to the church. The Sites of Grace do a good job of directing you to the church.
Entering Enir-Ilim
If you’re unclear on how to get to the West Rampart of Shadow Keep, you’ll need to head immediately left from the Storehouse First Floor Site of Grace, take the lift down, then make your way to the rampart which will lead to Ruins and Church.
When you get to the Church of Bud you will immediately be greeted by a boss door with the Church of Bud, Main Entrance site of grace close by. From here, you simply need to beat Romina Saint of the Bud and then head upstairs in the church to use Messmer’s Flame and clear the path. Romina is not an easy boss, but a summons near the boss door entrance can be used to help you and you can, as always, use your spirit summons to help you in the fight.
If no NPC summons are available, it’s because you haven’t yet met and spoken with the NPC Dryleaf Dane. They can be found at the Moorth Ruins Site of Grace (South of Shadow Keep).
After beating the boss, head up the stairs and step onto the seal in front of the withered tree. Assuming you’ve defeated Messmer and have the flame you will get the option to “Burn the sealing tree?“. Select Yes and you’ll be treated to a cutscene which introduces you to a new location, “Enir-Ilim” and you’ll be transported to the Enir-Ilim: Outer Wall Site of Grace.
You can choose to enter through this location, or, you can also enter Enir-Ilim from the other entrance, which can be found at the top of the staircase after the Dancing Lion in Belurat. Entering Enir-Ilim through the Theater of the Divine Beast will let you access the First Rise Site of Grace.
