Elden Ring: How to Kill the “Invincible” Madness Inflicting Enemies in Abyssal Woods

If you’ve made it to the Abyssal Woods in Elden Ring’s new Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for the game, congratulations.  Your prize is a slice of survival horror in your action-RPG.  The Abyssal Woods is a unique area for an Elden Ring game, with an enemy that is pretty tough to take down if you try to approach them as you would other enemy fodder.  In this guide we’ll explain how to take down these seemingly invincible madness inflicting monsters in the Abyssal Woods.

Can these enemies be killed?

The short answer is yes.  The long answer is an explanation of the game’s parry and riposte systems.  Unlike most enemies in Elden Ring, these baddies aren’t just scary looking they’ve got a unique power that will inflict you with madness.  Regardless of your character level, if these baddies get a hold of you, you’re likely done for.  However, if you keep them from getting close to you by using a parry right when they are about to strike you with their little yellow stick (or whatever it is) you can also fire off a riposte and follow it up with attacks.

As you can see in the video below, you simply need to time the parry correctly and you can open them up to attack.

How to Kill Them

These enemies can be found all over the Abyssal Woods, and there are some areas of this part of the map that give you the opportunity to hide in tall grass to avoid these monsters.  While that is an easy way to tackle the problem, the unfortunate side effect is that they’ll continue to be in your way each time you want to pass through that area.  If you use the parry and attack method to take them out, they won’t respawn on you.
